Tips to Winterize Your Car

Winter's here, and although the weather has been nicer than in the last few years, the cold still poses some challenges to drivers. Not only do the roads become harder to drive on, but you may notice your car acting funnier due to the weather. Here's a few tips to get your car ready for the oncoming snow. It's never to late to prepare for the cold weather.

1. Get the right kind of oil change.
Are you approaching the time for a 30,000-mile full service for your vehicle? If so, don’t procrastinate! Among other things, the service should include an oil change, and the oil used should have the right viscosity, or thickness, for your vehicle at this time of year. Oil tends to thicken as it gets colder, and if it’s too thick it won’t do the best job of keeping your engine lubricated. Check your owner’s manual for guidance about which oil to use in different climates and temperatures.

2. Make sure you can see. When’s the last time you replaced your windshield wiper blades? They usually work effectively for about one year, so be sure to invest in some new ones if you’re due. Here’s another important step to take before you find yourself struggling to see in a blinding storm: Fill up your windshield washer reservoir with windshield washer fluid. (Plain water won’t do the trick at this time of year because it freezes.) Also check to see that your heater and defroster are working properly so you can keep the windshield nice and clear.

3. Give your battery a little TLC.
This is an ideal time of year to make sure your battery’s posts and connections are corrosion-free and that your battery has all the water it needs. If your battery is more than three years old, have a certified repair shop test its ability to hold a charge. Granted, you might be able to find a Good Samaritan to help you jump-start your vehicle in the middle of a blizzard — but wouldn’t you rather avoid such a scenario altogether?

The 2014 Mazda Miata

Mazdais taking another look at the Miata with hopes to overhaul the engine, shave of some weight, and move back to some basic features that made the first Miata so popular. Not only does this promise to be a stylish and sleek car, but it should have around 40MPG to boot:
"Mazda is getting ready to overhaul the Miata with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a more muscular exterior. A new 1.3-liter engine using Mazda’s fuel-saving SkyActiv technology is going to power this fourth-generation Miata roadster. The engine should be significantly lighter and more efficient than the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that does duty in the Miata range here in the U.S.
A high compression ratio, direct injection, and reduced internal friction will help endow the lighter SkyActiv-equipped Mazda3 with better power than one might initially expect, and fuel economy (when compared to the 2.0-liter inline-4) is boosted by approximately 15 percent. For the record, the Mazda3 SkyActiv sedan returns an impressive 40 mpg on the highway (EPA) when equipped with the 6-speed automatic. A 6-speed manual is also available.
Look for the 2014 Mazda Miata to offer the same gearboxes. A manual soft-top should continue, and a power-operated folding hardtop will likely join the range at some point. There is a possibility that Mazda will offer further details about this all-new 2014 Miata at the Geneva Auto Show in March."

Boston Globe Names Kia Optima One of the Top Drives for 2012

Any car that launches Blake Griffin to an epic slam dunk has to be one of the best drives out there, right? The Boston Globe certainly thinks so!

Kia Optima
Price: $21,750
200-hp I-4/206-hp hybrid/274-hp turbo I-4, 6-speed auto, FWD, EPA 24/35 (standard trim)

During the NBA Slam Dunk Contest in February, Los Angeles Clippers star rookie Blake Griffin jumped over the Kia Optima to complete a dunk. For the rest of the year, it was the Optima doing the jumping over its competition. Sales increased three-fold through the first 11 months of 2011 compared to the same period in 2010.

The Optima has achieved a metamorphosis from “unremarkable” to a first-class, five-passenger, mid-sized sedan. In this total redesign Kia has given the Optima, like all its vehicles, a sportier image than its Korean cousin and corporate sibling Hyundai. Even though the Optima shares a platform and engines with the critically acclaimed Hyundai Sonata, the exterior design, suspension tuning, and interior treatment are significantly different.  The interior is surprisingly spacious. In addition, our test car got a gold star for having a heated steering wheel as an unexpected accoutrement.

We thought the midlevel Optima was just fine though we liked the turbo version as well. It’s also available as a hybrid.
